The average camera today is a point and shoot camera. But there is one thing that we do have complete control of and that is the composition of the photo. Anybody can get good composition in a photo. Here we have some tips so that you could get the most our of your camera.

What is the center of interest in the picture? Is it the landscape, a building, or is it an animal or another person? Get a mental picture before you take the actual picture.

Next, judge your viewpoint by deciding where to move. You can move to the left or right, zoom your camera in or out, or step back or forward to get the perfect viewpoint. As you assess the best position, the appearance of your picture would change. Take your picture without any unnecessary distractions.

If your camera doesn’t have a viewfinder, it’s easy to make one with your hands. Make your left thumb tip meet the right, with your hands flat. Make a square using both thumbs and forefingers. By holding the square in front of you, you can see your subject much better.

What makes an effective background? The background, first of all, should not contain any images that distract from the picture’s theme. A good background will not immediately draw attention away from the foreground by being too powerful.

Now how do you determine a good foreground? Ideally the foreground should catch the eye and lead it to the center of interest. The foreground also shouldn’t be too overpowering – it should be more of something that adds interest.

When taking long shots, don’t let the sky dominate. Try to think of ways that you can add perspective to the picture. Classic examples of objects with strong perspective would be roads, paths, or anything else with powerful lines.

Long shots are ideal for situations where you wish to add something to the background. Watch out, though, because you may not be able to recognize the picture’s human subject. Move in closer when you’re dealing with a human subject. If the shot you’re taking is candid and unplanned, you could get facial expressions you normally do not see in your subject.

Using a digital camera? The world is your oyster, so to say, so take as many pictures as you can. You would then have enough pictures to select between the good shots and the bad shots.
