  3. um actually.. the Cairo Tower was constructed against the backdrop of the Cold War and the context of the conflict over the Suez Canal. the CIA (chaired at the time by Kermit Roosevelt) offered Egyptian leader Nasser a personal bribe of $3 million dollars to resolve the matter in the US’s favour. Nasser accepted the money gladly, and with it built a tower in the middle of Cairo using local tradespeople to spite the CIA, where it achieved the local nickname “Roosevelt’s erection” after its creator. The tower is a statement against imperialism and cold war realpolitik

  4. The gist of cairo-tower comment’s anecdote is correct but Kermit Roosevelt Jr. was a senior CIA officer in the Middle East division. He never headed the CIA. From 1953 to 1961 Allen W. Dulles, brother of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, did.
