The Cairo Tower is a free-standing concrete TV tower in Cairo, Egypt. It stands in Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the River Nile, in the city centre. At 187 metres, it is 43 metres higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which stands some 15 km to the southwest. The Cairo Tower was built from 1956 to 1961, reportedly to convince a sceptical world the nation had the capability to construct the Aswan Dam. Its partially open lattice-work design is intended to evoke a lotus plant. The tower is crowned by an observation deck and a restaurant. Cairo sightseeing tours.

Giza pyramids is an excellent place to travel to. Sunset in the sands is something you should definitely see live.
um actually.. the Cairo Tower was constructed against the backdrop of the Cold War and the context of the conflict over the Suez Canal. the CIA (chaired at the time by Kermit Roosevelt) offered Egyptian leader Nasser a personal bribe of $3 million dollars to resolve the matter in the US’s favour. Nasser accepted the money gladly, and with it built a tower in the middle of Cairo using local tradespeople to spite the CIA, where it achieved the local nickname “Roosevelt’s erection” after its creator. The tower is a statement against imperialism and cold war realpolitik
The gist of cairo-tower comment’s anecdote is correct but Kermit Roosevelt Jr. was a senior CIA officer in the Middle East division. He never headed the CIA. From 1953 to 1961 Allen W. Dulles, brother of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, did.
