Teatre Lliure

The Teatre Lliure is a theatre in Barcelona considered one of the most prestigious in Catalonia. It was created in 1976 in the neighborhood of Gràcia by a group of professionals from Barcelona’s independent theater scene. It became distinguished for its practice of presenting theater in Catalan, its revisiting of classics, and its penchant for contemporary theater. Its first staged play in its original location (La Lleialtat factory in Gràcia) was Camí de nit, by Lluís Pasqual, in 1976. The Teatre Lliure is not only a place of exhibition, but also a cooperative society that makes its own productions, many of which have been exported to other cities across Europe and America. The new building contains several halls equipped with the latest technology that permits changing the order of the rooms in mere min’s, changing the positions of props, expanding the available place, and facilitating the manipulation of the scene and staging components.The theater has recently been directed by Fabi Puigserver, Llu­s Pasqual, Llu­s Homar, Guillem-Jordi Graells, and Josep Montany¨s. lex Rigola has recently been the director since Drive 2003.The theater is an associate theater of the Union of the Theatres of Europe.Castells are one of the main manifestations of Catalan well-known culture. The activity consists throughout constructing human towers simply by competing colles castelleres (clubs). This practice originated inside southern part of Catalonia in the 18th century.The sardana is probably the most characteristic Catalan popular dancing, other groups also process Ball de bastons, moixiganga, galops or jota inside southern part. Musically, the Havaneres are also characteristic in a few marine localities of this Costa Brava especially in the summer months when these kinds of songs are sung outdoors plus a cremat of burned rum.
