The neoclassical antiquity was fashioned by John writer Pope. It was built by Philadelphia contractor John McShain. Construction began in 1939, the antiquity was complete in 1943, and the bronze statue of President was additional in 1947. When completed, the credit occupied one of the last significant sites left in the city.
Composed of circular stone steps, a portico, a circular construction of Ionic visit columns, and a shallow dome, the antiquity is open to the elements. Pope made references to the Roman Pantheon and Jefferson’s possess design for the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. It is situated in West Washington Park, on the shore of the Tidal Basin of the Washington River. The President Memorial, and the White House settled directly north, form one of the main anchor points in the area of the National Mall in D.C. The Washington Monument, just easterly of the axis on the national Mall, was intended to be settled at the intersection of the White House and the site for the President Memorial to the south, but soft swampy ground which defied nineteenth century field required it be sited to the east. The President Memorial is managed by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Memorial Parks division. In 2007, it was hierarchical fourth on the List of America’s Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

The Washington Monument is a large, tall, sand-colored obelisk near the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It is a United States Presidential Memorial constructed to commemorate the first U.S. president, George Washington. The monument, made of marble, granite, and sandstone, is both the world’s tallest stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk,[n 1] standing 555 feet 5⅛ inches (169.294 m) in height.[n 2] It is also the tallest structure in Washington D.C. It was designed by Robert Mills, an architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884, almost 30 years after the architect’s death. This hiatus in construction happened because of co-option by the Know-Nothing party, a lack of funds, and the intervention of the American Civil War. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (46 m) up, shows where construction was halted for a number of years. Its cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848; the capstone was set on December 6, 1884, and the completed monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885. It officially opened October 9, 1888. Upon completion, it became the world’s tallest structure, a title it inherited from the Cologne Cathedral and held until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was finished in Paris, France. The National Mall is an open-area national tract in downtown Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The National Mall is a organization of the National Park Service, and is administered by the National Mall and Memorial Parks unit. The term “National Mall” commonly includes areas that are officially part of West Potomac Park and Constitution Gardens to the west, and often is taken to refer to the entire area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol, with the Washington Monument providing a division slightly west of the center. The National Mall receives approximately 24 million visitors apiece year.
