It is the focal point of the origin and of the history of the and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city. It is the meeting place of Florentines as well as the numerous tourists. The impressive 14th century Palazzo Vecchio is still preeminent with its crenellated tower. The square is also shared with the , the , the Palace of the Tribunale della Mercanzia (1359) (now the Bureau of Agriculture), and the Uguccioni Palace (16th c.) (with a facade probably by Raphael). Located in front of the Palazzo Vecchio is the Palace of the Assicurazioni Generali (1871, built in Renaissance style). Excellent in 2011.

It was designed by the Antoni Gaudí and built in the years 1900 to 1914. It is part of the Site “Works of Antoni Gaudí”. The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Güell, whom the park was named after. It was inspired by the English garden city movement; hence the original English name Park. The site was a rocky hill with little vegetation and few trees, called Muntanya Pelada (Bare Mountain). It already included a large country house called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House, and was next to a neighborhood of upper class houses called La Salud. The intention was to exploit the fresh air (well away from smoky factories) and beautiful views from the site, with sixty triangular lots being provided for luxury houses. Great summer for 2008.
