Grand Island, Strasbourg
Big Island, the historic center of Strasbourg, France, is an island in the Ill river. Literally "Grand Island, Grand Island was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. At that time, the International Council on Monuments and Sites noted that Grand Island is “old neighborhood that shows the medieval cities”. In addition to the church the fourth place in the cathedral of Strasbourg and the world an example of ornate Gothic architecture 15 century Grand Island is home to four other churches that date back several centuries: St. Thomas, St.-Pierre- le-Vieux, Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune, and Saint-Etienne. On the occasion of the Grand Island status as a World Heritage site, 22 copper plates were placed on the bridge of the island. Grand Island is sometimes referred to as an “island island” in form.
