The museum focuses on of the nineteenth century to today. Its properties are from the private collection of Charles (1858-1940) and Emma († 1934) Frye. Carlos, owner of a meatpacking company local, the allocation of money in his will for a museum to house the Frye, a collection of more than 230 paintings. The opened in 1952 and was the first museum free. The museum building was designed by Paul Thiry, but has since been considerably modified.

Located in Downtown, it occupies over 9 acres (36,000 m²). The Market is bounded by First Avenue to the east, to the west, Virginia Street to the north, and, to the south, a line drawn from First to halfway between and Union Street.
