Oia is a community on the islands of Thira (Santorini) and Therasia, in the Cyclades, Greece. The population was 1,230 inhabitants at the 2001 census, and the land area is 19.449 km². The population and land area are distributed as follows: 962 persons on 10.150 km² in Santorini, and 268 persons on 9.299 km² in Therasia. The community shares the island of Thira with the Municipality of Thira (Santorini), and is centered in the northwesternmost part of the island. Greece honeymoon vacations.

Akrotiri is the name of an excavation site of an Bronze Age settlement on the Greek island of Santorini, associated with the Minoan civilization due to close similarities in artifact and fresco styles. The excavation is named for a modern Greek village situated on a hill nearby. The name of the site in antiquity is unknown. It was buried by a volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC, and as a result is remarkably well-preserved. Frescoes, pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems and three-storey buildings have been discovered at the site. An ambitious modern roof structure, meant to protect the site, collapsed just prior to its completion in 2005, killing one visitor. No damages were recorded to the antiquities. As a result of this, the site is currently closed to visitors (early 2008). Excavated artifacts have been installed in a museum distant from the site (Museum of Prehistoric Thera), with many objects and artworks presented. Only a single gold object has been found, hidden beneath flooring, and no uninterred human skeletal remains have been found. Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece’s mainland. It is also known as Thera (or Thira). It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km² (28 mi²), and in 2001 had an estimated population of 13,600. Santorini is essentially what has been left from an enormous volcanic explosion which destroyed the settlements thereon and led to the creation of the current geological caldera. Its spectacular natural beauty along with its eminent nightlife make the island one of Europe’s top tourist hotspots.
