The , California, opened in 1915, in its open space area in the city’s , is a Beaux-Arts monument to the brief “City Beautiful” movement that epitomized the high-minded American Renaissance of the period 1880-1917. The present building is actually a replacement for an earlier City Hall that was completely destroyed during the 1906 Earthquake. The architect was Arthur Brown Jr, whose attention to the finishing details extended to the doorknobs and the typeface to be used in signage. Brown also designed San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, Temple Emanuel, Coit Tower and the Federal office building at 50 United Nations Plaza. Alamo Square, San Francisco, California
consists of six city blocks at the top of a hill overlooking much of San Francisco, with a number of large and architecturally distinctive mansions along the perimeter. It is bordered by Hayes Street to the south, Fulton Street to the north, Scott Street to the west, and Steiner Street to the east. The park includes a playground and a tennis court, and is frequented by neighbors, tourists, and dog owners. A row of Victorian houses facing the park on Steiner Street, known as the painted ladies, are often shown in the foreground of panoramic pictures of the city’s downtown area. On a clear day, the Transamerica Pyramid building and the tops of the and Bay Bridge can be seen from the park’s center. San Francisco’s City Hall can be seen directly down Fulton Street. Founded in 1969 by the physicist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, the is dedicated to teaching science through hands-on exhibits. The is a museum in San Francisco, California. It contains historical and explanatory exhibits on the system, which can itself be regarded as a working museum. The museum is entered from an entrance at Washington and Mason. The museum contains several examples of old , together with smaller exhibits and a shop. Perhaps of more interest are two overlook galleries which allow the visitor to overlook both the main power house, and also to descend below the junction of Washington and in order to view the large cavern where the haulage cables are routed out to the street. The museum is open from 10 AM to 5 PM from october to april, while during may to september it is open from 10am to 6pm and is free of charge to the public.The cable car museum only closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is best known for being the location of , National Historical Park, the Cannery Shopping Center, Ghirardelli Square, a Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum, the Musée Mécanique, the Wax Museum at Fisherman’s Wharf, and restaurants and stands that serve fresh seafood, most notably dungeness crab and clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl. Some of the restaurants, like Pompeii’s and Alioto’s #8, go back for three generations of the same family ownership. Nearby Pier 45, there is a chapel in memory of the “Lost Fishermen” of San Francisco and Northern California though it might not always be open everyday. Once a year, the chapel has a service for the lost fishermen.
