Rockefeller Center was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who rented the space from Columbia University in 1928 and it developed from 1930. Rockefeller initially planned a syndicate to build an opera for the Metropolitan Opera on the site, but changed his mind after the 1929 stock market crash and the Metropolitan continued delays to hold a lease for more favorable than the causes of Rockefeller for moving forward without them.
