Pera Museum is a museum in Istanbul, Turkey, founded in 2005 by the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation. The museum is housed in a renovated historical building, which was originally constructed in 1893 by the architect Achille Manoussos in the Tepebasi neighborhood of Istanbul. The building is one of the most significant in Pera and served as the Bristol Hotel for a long period. Pera Museum’s permanent collections include the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation’s collection of Orientalist art, which consists of more than three hundred paintings. This rich collection brings together important works by European artists inspired by the Ottoman world from the 17th century to the early 19th. The collection, which presents a vast visual panorama of the last two centuries of the Ottoman Empire, includes works by Osman Hamdi Bey, regarded by art historians as the genre’s only “native Orientalist” including his most famous painting The Tortoise Trainer. Other notable permanent collections are Anatolian weights and measures, Kutahya tiles and ceramics. Istanbul sightseeing tours.
When it opened to the public in 1891, it was the first one to feature Turkish art. The first curator was Osman Hamdi Bey, who was also the founder of the museum. Since the imperial decree protecting cultural goods in the Ottoman empire was enforced, many governors from the different provinces would send in found artefacts to the capital city. In that way the museum was able to amass a great collection. Upon its 100th anniversary in 1991, the Museum received the European Council Museum Award, particularly for the renovations made to the lower floor halls in the main building and the new displays in the other buildings. One of the city’s most striking landmarks, it is a huge, cone-capped cylinder that dominates the skyline on the Galata side of the Golden Horn. The tower was built as Christea Turris in 1348 during an expansion of the Genoese colony in Constantinople. It was the apex of the fortifications surrounding the Genoese citadel of Galata. The current tower should not be confused with the old Tower of Galata, an original Byzantine tower, named Megalos Pyrgos, which controlled the northern end of the massive sea chain that closed the entrance of the Golden Horn. This tower was on a different site and was largely destroyed during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The 66.90 meter tower (62.59 m without the ornament on top, 51.65 m at the observation deck) was the city’s tallest structure when built. The elevation at ground level is 35 meters above sea-level. The upper section of the tower with the conical cap was slightly modified in several restorations during the Ottoman period when it was used as an observation tower for spotting fires. Dolmabahce Palace was the first European-style palace in Istanbul and was built by Sultan Abdülmecid between 1842 and 1853, at a cost of five million Ottoman gold pounds, the equivalent of 35 tons of gold. Fourteen tons of gold in the form of gold leaf were used to gild the ceilings of the palace. The world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, is at the center hall. The chandelier has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tons. Dolmabahce has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world, and one of the great staircases has bannisters of Baccarat crystal. Great travel attractions.
The name comes from the Greek name meaning “Church of the Holy Wisdom of God”. It is also known as Sancta Sophia in Latin and Ayasofya in Turkish. Although it is sometimes called “Saint Sophia” in English, it is not named after a saint named Sophia — the Greek word sofia means “wisdom.”
It was constructed in five years, from 532 to 537, and designed by Isidore of Miletus.
