Rockefeller Center was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who rented the space from Columbia University in 1928 and it developed from 1930. Rockefeller initially planned a syndicate to build an opera for the Metropolitan Opera on the site, but changed his mind after the 1929 stock market crash and the Metropolitan continued delays to hold a lease for more favorable than the causes of Rockefeller for moving forward without them. Rockefeller said: &#8220;It was clear that there were only two courses open to me one summer to abandon the development of any other to move forward in the detailed knowledge that I myself to build it and finance it alone &#8230; &#8220;He took on the enormous project as the exclusive financial, on a 27-year lease (with option for three 21-year renewals for a total of 87 years) the site of Columbia, to negotiate a line of credit with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and cover the operating costs through the sale of shares in the oil company.</p>
