Flatiron Building


The Flatiron Building, or Fuller Building as it was originally called, is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan, and is considered to be one of the first skyscrapers ever built. Upon completion in 1902 it was one of the tallest buildings in New York City. The building sits on a triangular island block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, anchoring the south (downtown) end of Madison Square. Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres between 48th and 51st Streets in New York City. Built by the Rockefeller family, it is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spanning between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. It is the largest privately held complex of its kind in the world, and an international symbol of modernist architectural style blended with capitalism.

Rockefeller Center was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who rented the space from Columbia University in 1928 and it developed from 1930. Rockefeller initially planned a syndicate to build an opera for the Metropolitan Opera on the site, but changed his mind after the 1929 stock market crash and the Metropolitan continued delays to hold a lease for more favorable than the causes of Rockefeller for moving forward without them. Rockefeller said: “It was clear that there were only two courses open to me one summer to abandon the development of any other to move forward in the detailed knowledge that I myself to build it and finance it alone … “He took on the enormous project as the exclusive financial, on a 27-year lease (with option for three 21-year renewals for a total of 87 years) the site of Columbia, to negotiate a line of credit with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and cover the operating costs through the sale of shares in the oil company.
