New legislation could jeapordise the fragile but recovering cruise ship industry according to Carnival UK boss David Dingle, speaking in Cannes recently. The International Martime Organisation (IMO) has recently passed laws on Sulphur emissions, including a stipulation that lines must burn fuel that emits no more than 0.5% sulphur. Dingle considers the move ‘ill-thought out’, and ‘badly researched’.

The impositions currently only concern the Baltic and North Sea. But many lines currently sail these routes including Oceania cruises. The legislation there (and extending to the English channel) has a lot to with European treaties and by 2012, the Mediterranean will follow suit. It’s 1,188 feet long and it weighs 225,282 gross tons. Sixteen passenger decks carry enough berths for six thousand four hundred passengers and it’s all powered by six diesel engines. Due to an anomaly, even though its sister ship ‘Oasis of the Seas’ was ordered to the exact same specifications, ‘Allure’ is two inches longer, therefore making it the largest passenger ship ever constructed. It’s all very impressive stuff, but we’ve heard it before. And we’ll hear it again.
