The (BL) is the national accumulation of the United Kingdom. The accumulation is one of the world’s largest , holding over 150 million items in all known languages and formats: books, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings and such more. Its book assemblage is second only to the American . The Library’s collections include around 14 , along with substantial added assemblage of manuscripts and historical items dating back as far as 300 BC.

As a jural , the BL receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and the , including all foreign books distributed in the UK. It also purchases many items which are only published outside Britain and Ireland. The British Library adds some three million items every year.
The Library is a non-departmental open body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It is located on the north side of Euston Road in St Pancras, London, between Euston railway send and St Pancras railway station.

(incorporated as The President and Fellows of ) is a in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S., and a member of the . Founded in 1636 by the colonial Harvard is the oldest in the United States. It is also the first and oldest corporation in the Americas. The British Museum in London is one of the world’s greatest of and culture. Its collections, which number more than 13 million objects from all continents, illustrate and document the story of from its beginning to the present.
The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist . The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House in , on the site of the current museum building. Its expansion over the following two and a half centuries has resulted in the creation of several branch institutions, the first being the British Museum () in in 1887. Until 1997, when the British Library opened to the public, the British Museum was unique in that it housed both a national and a in the same building.
