Vimanmek Palace was built in 1900 by His Majesty King avatar V by having the Munthatu Rattanaroj Residence in Chuthathuj Rachathan at Ko Sichang, Chonburi, dismantled and reassembled in Dusit Garden. The celebration for the completion of Vimanmek Palace was held on March 27, 1901. It was utilised as a royal hall by King avatar V for five years until the completion of Amphorn Satharn Villa in 1906. In 1932, Vimanmek Palace was utilised exclusive as a storage place of the Bureau of the Royal Household.

In 1982 Her Majesty Queen Sirikit asked authorisation of His Majesty King avatar IX to renovate Vimanmek Palace for use as a museum to commemorate King avatar V by displaying his photographs, personal art and handicrafts, and to help as a showcase of the Thai national heritage. The hall is now a major traveler attraction and is the world’s largest metallic teakwood mansion.
