one of the main reasons that people actually choose to go on a short break or vacation to Devon is because of the amazing history that can be found there. Of course it is not just history here, there are amazing beaches, national parks and groups of very nice people. However for this I am going to be diving into the history of the place a bit more so without further ado, a look into the history of Devon!
The Name
One of the many things people want to know about Devon is where does the name come from? the name itself comes from the Celtic people that first found the land and settled there, they were know as the Dumonii which meant deep valley dwellers.
The Settlers
It would seem that Devon is one of the very first places in which people were settling down after the ice age and Dartmoor came to be home to hunters around the year 6000 BC, a very long time ago indeed. Once this was over the Romans came in and held the area for over 250 years and once this happened a frontier absorbed it and Wessex took over in the 9th century. It has played a big part in many of the civil wars/conflicts that have happened in England.
Of course it isn’t all about history when it comes to Devon and the seaside resort of Torquay is a great place to visit. Why not try holidays in Torquay or spa breaks here for something a bit different. You could even go on Christmas holidays here!
Devon is a great place to visit and although one of those reasons is the history there are many other things to do and see so make sure you go there!
