Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens, Florence

The , in English sometimes called the , is a vast mainly Renaissance palace in Florence, Italy. It is situated on the south side of the , a short distance from the . The core of the present palazzo dates from 1458 and was originally the town residence of , an ambitious Florentine banker. It was bought by the Medici family in 1539 and later became the chief residence of the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of , becoming a great treasure house as various generations amassed paintings, plate, jewellery and luxurious possessions.
