We are often so excited to travel that we forget to sort out so many things before walking out of the door. Here’s some advice for anybody who’s leaving town or simply leaving the house. You could avoid running into unexpected problems when you return home from your enjoyable vacation.
Turn your water heater down to the lowest setting.
Turn your air conditioner up in summer. You want to reduce your bills, but you may have to keep the house from getting too hot to protect your pets and electronics.
Turn your heat down or off in spring or fall. Of course, you need to keep the house warm in the winter. You may want to reduce your bills, but you may need to keep the house from getting too cold to protect your pets and water pipes.
Leave shades or drapes as you normally would if you were home.
For some parts of the day, you can use a cheap radio plugged into a timer to simulate noise.
Lock all doors and windows including the basement & garage.
Your computer and other electronic items need to be unplugged when you leave home, to protect against possible storms. Remember to unhook your phone line from the modem. Unfortunately, you may have to leave it all hooked up if your computer is your only answering machine. You need to have your surge protectors set up correctly.
Park the car inside the garage, with the door down, so people driving by won’t find out you’re leaving.
Lastly, disconnect your garage door. Unplug it if you can, don’t pull the fuse for the garage door until you verify the fuse isn’t hooked up to something that needs to stay on, such as, your refrigerator or maybe a freezer in the garage.
Follow these tips and you can make sure you’re all covered before you leave for vacation. Don’t let yourself run into some unexpected trouble when you get back home – make sure you follow most, if not all of these tips.
