It is all too common for travelers to feel all geared up to go on a wonderful trip, go on the trip, and arrive at the airport down in the dumps and sleepy as can be. Or landing in Dubai and going straight to a meeting where all the participants are discussing very important deals, only to be falling asleep at the conference table.

When flying to another country or time zone, jet lag is something we have to deal with. Most sufferers are disoriented with the time zone, not to mention tired, dehydrated and sometimes stiff in movement. Here are some ways that can help you fight the effects of jet lag following .

Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages before or while on the flight. Alcohol is known to increase dehydration and fatigue.

Before the flight takes off and right after it lands, drink a lot of water. Water will cut down on the dehydration and can also help with muscle fatigue.

This may be a bit tricky for some, but you will need to be familiar with the time zone you’re flying to so you can set your sleeping schedule accordingly to the time zone of your destination. Thus, if getting on a plane in the afternoon while it is late at night in the city you are flying to, then it’s time to sleep.

Sleep just as you would on most evenings while you are on the plane. Use earplugs and light-reducing eye covers if needed.

Keep your feet elevated whenever you could on the flight.

Upon arrival, a shower will help refresh and revitalize you. In as much as possible, avoid taking naps, and adjust to the new time zone.

On your first night at your destination, stay up as late as you could. If your schedule is one with a lot of late night engagements, try staying up past midnight on the first night.

The second day would be when you need to follow through on your first day preparation, thus making it a tough one for even seasoned travelers. Maintain a disciplined schedule. You can ask your hotel for a wake-up call, or set your alarm for the morning of your second day.

Try a spa treatment for muscle fatigue and dehydrated skin.

Lastly, it could be quite helpful to spend some time in the sunlight and fresh air on your first day, to help acclimate your body clock to the new time zone.
