Since the 2010 World Cup, many people have added South Africa as a vacation destination. The wildlife is a huge attraction there and they have many wildlife parks. There are, however, several things that you should consider before going.

Your Budget

Although the exchange rate is generally in the international visitor’s favor, there are a variety of options available that can make your vacation more affordable. There are usually game lodges that offer nice accommodation and organized game drives. These places are more for people who aren’t worried about how much money they spend.

The national parks usually offer self-catering cottages and camping facilities, with stores and food available.

You also could stay in a hotel or guest house. This will give you more freedom, even if you have to hire a car. South Africa also has many well-equipped and maintained camping sites.

Seasons

South Africa, being in the southern hemisphere, has its seasons reversed. The best game viewing time is in winter June to September where temperatures may reach 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on which part of the country you are visiting.

Winter is usually the dry season so it brings the animals to water holes. You will be able to see them more clearly because the vegetation isn’t so dense.

Safety

The crime statistics in South Africa may deter some visitors, an alert tourist will have no problems. They do however, have to be alert and aware of what is going on around them. In smaller towns, you really only need to look out for petty theft. Don’t leave cameras, cell phones, or wallets unattended. Cars should stay locked and valuables should be packed away, hidden.

The animals that you’ll see are wild, and very dangerous. Follow the regulations regarding staying in the car, keeping windows closed, not feeding the animals or teasing them. Although an animal may appear unperturbed by a car stopping nearby, they can quickly change their minds if they feel threatened, with disastrous consequences.

Check and see if the area is prone to diseases like malaria. Whether or not it is malaria prone, have insect spray on you at all times. Sunscreen is essential too.

Outside of a zoo, you will never see wild animals like this. The “Big Five”, which are lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and Cape buffalo, are supplemented by other animals like antelope and giraffe. South Africa has beautiful landscapes, beaches, and other attractions.
