Traveling takes its toll on your luggage, and choosing a suitcase or other travel bag, especially if you travel regularly, can be quite tricky. A cheaper bag may be tempting. You’ve most likely never bought a quality bag. At the same time, the fancy, expensive designer luggage is seldom better, costing you more for the label than for any additional quality or functionality.
You’ll need to first decide what kind of trip and what you’ll be carrying. Check regulations for luggage on planes. Hard cases will protect your items better. The downside is that they are inflexible. They also will be more heavier.
Soft bags are expandable. They are great for plane trips, but they won’t protect your stuff as well. A semi soft bag will be your best bet. Semi-soft bags will provide protection as well as have expandable tops and bottoms. These bags can be squished down to size, and still protect your items.
No matter our mode of travel, rolling bags are good. You will get less tired if you can roll your luggage everywhere. Go for recessed rubberized wheels. If you can afford a little extra, try to get a suitcase with 4 spinner wheels. Your bag will be more balanced with four wheels and you’ll be able to steer the bag and turn corners easily.
The handle length should be comfortable for you. Make sure the handle locks down so it won’t get broken if you check it. A good quality bag will have two short sets of handles. Some rolling bags have a hook or detachable piggyback clip which allows you to hook another bag onto the rolling bag, using it as a cart to help you carry more than one bag.
A brightly colored bag will avoid mix ups. Avoid leather it scratches easily, is not water resistant, and can be heavy. A self repairing zipper is a must. Metal zippers break very easily.
A combination lock is also recommended. Label the bag well, and leave contact details inside the bag as well to make it easy for people to find you should your bag get lost. It may be a little more expensive, but a well-built, functional bag will last you a lifetime. Get a warranty on the bag if it’s offered.
