The Papal Major, is an ancient Roman basilica of Rome. It is digit of the quaternary field or quaternary papal basilicas, which, together with St. Lawrence outside the Walls, were formerly referred to as the five “patriarchal basilicas” of Rome, associated with the five ancient patriarchal sees of Christendom (see Pentarchy). The other three papal or field basilicas are St. John Lateran, St. Peter and St. Paul outside the Walls.

The Liberian Basilica (another title for the church) is digit of the tituli, presided over by a patron—in this case —that housed the field congregations of in Rome. Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, from which it differs by spolia, the extensive re-use of parts of earlier buildings. The arch is 21 m high, 25.7 m wide and 7.4 m deep. It has three archways, the central one being 11.5 m high and 6.5 m wide, the lateral archways 7.4 m by 3.4 m each. The lower part of the monument is built of marble blocks, the top (called attic) is brickwork reveted with marble. A staircase formed in the thickness of the arch is entered from a door at some height from the ground, in the end towards the Palatine Hill. The general design with a main part structured by detached columns and an attic with the main inscription above is modelled after the example of the on the . It has been suggested that the lower part of the arch is re-used from an older monument, probably from the times of the (Conforto et al., 2001; for a defence of the view that the whole arch was constructed in the 4th century, see Pensabene & Panella). It was opened in 1937 and after the last renovation, since 2008, the stadium has a capacity of 72,700 seats. It was the site of the 1960 Summer Olympics, but has also served as the location of the 1987 World Athletics Championships and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. It will also be hosting the Final in 2009.
Also on the Foro Italico lies the , or “marble stadium”, which was built in 1932 and designed by Enrico Del Debbio. It boasts enormous tiers topped by 60 white that were gifts from in commemoration of 60 athletes. .
