is a historic palace in Avignon in southern France, one of the largest and most important medieval in Europe. Since 1995, Palais des Papes is classified as the historical center of Avignon on the by UNESCO, the cultural criteria I, II and IV.

Avignon became the residence of the popes in 1309, when the Gascon Bertrand de Goth, as , willing to face the violent chaos of Rome after his election (1305), transferred the in Avignon, a period known as the name of the papacy from Avignon. Clemente lived as a guest in the of Avignon, and his successor, XXII create a magnificent there, but the reconstruction of the ancient palace of the bishops was formally opened by XII (1334-42) and continued by their successors in 1364.

Once completed, it occupied an area of 11,000 square meters (2.6 acres). The building was very expensive, consumes a significant amount of revenue for the papacy during its construction.
