Castiglioncello, Italy

Castiglioncello

Castiglioncello is a frazione of the comune of Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, Italy. It stands on a promontory reaching out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, surrounded by pinewoods and hills that fall right down to the sea forming cliffs, little inlets, coves and sandy beaches. Pines, oaks and rocky cliffs covered by vegetation make this region a unique one. The colour green prevails, dotted with the white of romantic villas. The weather is very mild all year round and the beaches are just a few metres outside the village. The beauty of this area did not go unnoticed by the Romans and Etruscans, as well as by the Medici in the Renaissance. In recent times, important Italian people (including Luigi Pirandello, Marcello Mastroianni, Luchino Visconti, Vittorio Gassman) have built their residence here. There are also many resorts on the coast in the area around Castiglioncello. This list list includes an ‘agriturismo’ created by the noble italian family Bartolini Baldelli. An artistic movement of the 19th century, called Macchiaioli, with painters like Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini and others, chose this village, because of its beauty, as an inspirational source for their work.
