House swap, or home exchange, is an innovative way to travel where you stay in someone’s house and you make your own home available when you are away. People participate in these arrangements for a number of reasons, and there are many advantages to traveling this way. We’ve provided you with some useful tips for house swapping should you ever decide to give it a try.
There are usually no problems with house swap arrangements, but it’s highly recommended that all is totally clear before agreeing to anything in the arrangement. Just like with so many other arrangements, it is highly recommended that everything is in writing and agreed upon. So, for example, if there are any pets that need to be taken care of, or house plants, then ensure that everything is spelled out as to what needs to be done, etc. Both sides need to think about what is OK for the other party to use such as phones, or the PC (or MAC), or the stereo, etc. As with using the phone, if you can pay them back for any additional charges, then don’t assume it’s OK – put it in writing so there are no hard feelings or problems.
We do understand that many who are new to house swapping may wonder about the other person. As far as we can tell, and know, those who are in agencies are honest people and understand that they need to be respectful with other people’s homes. Still, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for references before letting someone stay in your home. Also, you may want to talk to your home owners insurance company, or check your policy, and be sure it’s acceptable to do this. If you rent, then avoid any issues with your landlord, and just give them a head’s up about the situation and the swap. Conversely, avoid feeling offended if the other party asks you for something like references, etc.
While home exchange arrangements can be a fun and enriching experience, they are not for everyone. Before you participate, you should make sure it’s something you are comfortable with. If you find the idea of strangers staying in your home frightening or repellent, then this may not be the right kind of program for you. If you want, you can give short term swaps a try just to see how you like it. So just give it a try for a couple of days, and then gauge how you feel about it and how you feel coming home. You really never know, and you may discover that it’s not a big deal. Or, you may decide to stick with more conventional types of travel.
Home exchange can open up a whole new world for you. For many people, it allows them to travel more often and make new contacts around the world. The best way to find out how you like it is to give it a try. You can always find out more, and you should in addition to what we’ve provided for you here.
